Meet the HAV 304, a heavier than airship. You what? A heavier than air hybrid airship. It uses aerodynamic lift and engine power to take off and helium to keep it up once airborne. It was designed by a group of companies led by Hybrid Air Vehicles to compete for the US armed forces’ LEMV project. The project was subsequently cancelled and the craft was sold back to HAV for $310,000. The US taxpayer spent $297m on it.
It’s now stored at an old aircraft hangar at Cardington, Bedfordshire which was previously the home of the late R101. HAV have plans to build bigger versions for civil use.
The HAV 304 is said to be the longest aircraft in the world.

That was quite a popular picture at the time, for some reason.
